Die junge Amerikanerin Dino Chalmers beginnt ihren Dienst an einer Schule in der Problemgegend Redfern, einem armen Vorort Sydneys, und erkennt schnell, dass den Schülern mit normalem Unterricht nicht geholfen ist. Also versucht die Literaturlehrerin mit der Hilfe von Shakespeare und eines Theaterprojektes die Schüler aus ihren tristen Alltag zu reißen. Bei dem jungen Aborigine Liam treffen ihre Bemühungen auf fruchtbaren Boden. Doch Liam droht durch die Probleme des Milieus, in dem er und seine Familie lebt, und dem Zerfall seiner Familie zu zerbrechen. Als ein anderer junger Aborigine von der Polizei getötet wird und Krawalle den Stadtteil erschüttern, kann Dino nur hilflos zusehen. Und Liam steht an einem Scheideweg: Den scheinbar vorbestimmten Weg des Niedergangs wählen oder einen Ausweg durch die Kraft der Imagination suchen.
