Die Einführung des julianischen und später des gregorianischen Kalenders führt im Jahr 2013 zu einer Verschiebung der Tage im Vergleich zum alten Maya-Kalender, der das Ende der Welt am 21.12.2012 vorhersagt. Durch zahlreiche Änderungen im Verlauf der Zeit in den üblichen Kalendern ist in der Zeitzählung der Maya ein 13. Monat im 13. Jahr des neuen Millenniums entstanden. Und offenbar hat der 13. dieses ungewöhnlichen Monats einen ungewöhnlichen Effekt auf alle Menschen, die nicht am 29. Februar geboren wurden: Sie drehen durch und versuchen alles und jeden umzubringen. In dieser verrückten Welt befindet sich Jack mit seiner geschiedenen Frau Marcy auf dem Weg ins Krankenhaus, während seine zwölfjährige Tochter Kendra bei seinen Freunden zurückbleibt. Als die ersten Menschen plötzlich beginnen, verrückt zu werden, versucht Jack zurück zu seiner Tochter zu gelangen, in der Hoffnung, dass sie noch nicht Opfer des Wahnsinns um sie herum geworden ist.
